Recall

Recall is how you ask your book a question and get a real answer back — built from what you actually saw and recorded, not from the open web. You can ask from four places. The Concordance (⌥Space, from any app) finds or asks across days, meetings and indexed files. The Index (⌘K) jumps to a page. Ask your memory… on Today searches anything you saw. Memory → Ask (⌥⌘1) is for longer conversations. Single days and meetings have their own Ask fields.

The Concordance: from any app#

Press ⌥Space in any app to open the Concordance, a small floating panel. Choose Find to jump to a day, a meeting or an indexed file, or Ask to get an answer about anything you've captured. Narrow it with All, Days, Meetings or Files (⌘1–⌘4).

After an answer, Correct sets the record straight for future answers, and Continue in Memory (⌘Return) carries the conversation into Memory's Ask tab.

Change the shortcut in Settings → General → The Concordance. If another app has taken it, use Go → Summon the Concordance.

The Index: jump anywhere#

Press ⌘K anywhere in Everpaper to open the Index. It is both a table of contents and a search box for the whole book.

Start typing and it filters across everything in one place:

• The Days: any finished day, by title, summary, or date.
• Meetings: a recorded meeting, by title.
• Commonplace Book: beliefs Memory has formed.
• Lexicon: your word corrections and saved phrases.
• Settings: any setting, landing on its own row.
• Commands: actions such as Turn to today, Begin meeting / End meeting, Run setup again, Check for updates.

Open with an empty query and the Index shows a table of contents instead: the Parts of your book (Today, Meetings, Timeline, Library, Memory, Settings), your three most recent days and meetings, and common commands.

Move the selection with the up and down arrows, press Return to go, and Esc to dismiss — focus returns to the page you were on.

Ask your memory: a question across every day#

When you want an answer rather than a destination, ask the book. On Today, type in Ask your memory… (or choose Go → Ask the Book, ⇧⌘A, to jump there), or try a chip such as What did I decide?. In Timeline, Ask the book (⌘F) opens the same search across every day.

The search view, headed Ask the book, looks through anything you saw, across every day. Type a question — "what was the address jane.smith sent me?", "which build broke last Thursday?" — and the book answers from your own captured history.

How the answer is built#

If Everpaper may use your AI (an on-device or trusted private provider, or a cloud provider with Allow cloud AI to analyze your journal turned on), the answer streams back as prose, written only from the days and frames that match your question. Under the answer is a Sources list. Each source is the exact frame the answer drew from, shown as its time, the app, and the window title — for example:

Click any source to open that frame: the original screen, at the moment it was captured, so you can verify the answer with your own eyes. Every [#N] in the answer maps to a row in the list. Answers can still get a detail wrong, so open the sources when it matters.

If Everpaper can't use an AI for this, Recall still works. Instead of prose, it returns cards — each one a specific match (a phone number, an email, a link, a file you saw) carrying the same time-and-place stamp, and a click opens the frame it came from. Recording and search never need AI; the answer style just changes.

Quick filters#

The Ask the book view offers chips you can click for the things people look for most:

• Phone numbers
• Emails
• Links
• Files

Click one to seed the search and see every matching moment.

What you keep coming back to#

Before you've typed anything, Recall shows You keep coming back to — the people, sites, and files that recur across your days, each with how many days it spans and how many times you've seen it. Click one to turn it into a search.

Asking about a single meeting#

Open the meeting, choose the Ask tab and type in Ask this meeting…. While a meeting is still recording, use Ask about what’s been said… under the live transcript. A single finished day has Ask this day… at the foot of its page.

A note on where this runs#

Recall reads your own on-device book. Search and the card results stay entirely on your Mac. The streamed prose answer uses the AI you set up in Settings → AI & summaries; an on-device provider keeps that on your Mac too. See AI on your Mac.
