Limitless alternatives: 5 honest options in 2026

Limitless users didn't choose to shop for an alternative. The choice was made for them. On December 5, 2025, Meta announced it was acquiring Limitless, the company founded as Rewind AI in 2020 and rebranded in 2024. Pendant sales stopped the same day. The desktop and web apps lost recording. Users in the EU, UK, Brazil, China, Israel, South Korea, and Turkey were cut off with two weeks' notice, data deleted after December 19, 2025.

What's left is a service in sunset: existing customers get the Unlimited plan free, with support committed "throughout 2026." That's not a roadmap. That's a bridge, and bridges are for crossing, not living on.

A quick disclosure before anything else: Everpaper is our product. It sits first because we built it for someone who wants a private record of their days without handing everything to a cloud provider. Read that entry with the appropriate grain of salt. Why people are leaving Limitless

Usually a "why people leave X" section lists grievances. Here it's simpler: the product is ending.

The Meta acquisition. Announced 2025-12-05, covered by TechCrunch the same day. Meta's stated rationale is "personal superintelligence" and AI wearables; the Limitless team joins Meta. The official Limitless FAQ gives no product roadmap beyond its 2026 support commitment.

The Pendant is no longer sold. Sales halted December 5, 2025. The device launched at $99 in April 2024. Existing owners get Unlimited free and support "throughout 2026." There is no official commitment beyond that window.

The apps stopped recording. The Mac/Windows desktop apps and the web app at app.limitless.ai had recording disabled after the acquisition. You can access past recordings through 2026; you can't make new ones. For a product whose entire premise was capture, that's the end of the product in every sense that matters.

Seven country and regional markets were cut off. Users in the EU, UK, Brazil, China, Israel, South Korea, and Turkey lost access on December 5, 2025. Their data was deleted after December 19. Limitless provided an export tool, but two weeks is a short migration window for a memory archive.

The privacy story changed. Rewind built its name on on-device processing. Limitless moved to cloud processing with TLS in transit, HSM-backed storage, and configurable retention. Remaining users must accept updated terms tied to Meta.

The free Unlimited plan is a bridge. Existing customers no longer pay a subscription during the support window. Using that access while testing replacements is reasonable. Depending on it past 2026 isn't.

2. ScreenPipe — best for tinkerers who want raw 24/7 capture, cross-platform

ScreenPipe is the closest living relative of Limitless's desktop capture. It records screen and mic, performs OCR and local Whisper transcription, exposes a local API at localhost:3030, and supports scheduled AI agents called pipes. Capture, search, and transcription can work offline on macOS, Windows, and Linux, though Linux support varies by compositor.

It is closer to infrastructure than a finished meeting product. Users assemble summaries and filing workflows through pipes, and continuous capture costs CPU and battery. Its license changed from MIT to the source-available Screenpipe Commercial License on 2026-06-09; commercial use of the source now requires a paid license.

3. Granola — best if meetings were your whole Limitless use case

Granola captures microphone and system audio without a meeting bot. You write rough notes during the call, then its AI expands them using the transcript. It supports macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android and raised a $125M Series C at a $1.5B valuation in March 2026.

It is cloud-based. Transcription uses Deepgram or AssemblyAI; summarization uses OpenAI or Anthropic; notes live in US-hosted AWS. Audio isn't stored, but consumer-tier training on anonymized data is on by default and can be disabled in Settings. Desktop speaker labels default to “Me” and “Them,” with named speakers on Google Meet and Zoom through extensions. Granola handles meetings, not a day journal or wearable capture.

4. Otter.ai — the incumbent, bot and baggage included

Otter covers web, Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. OtterPilot joins Zoom, Meet, and Teams as a visible participant, transcribes live, captures slides, and sends a summary. Its integrations include Salesforce, HubSpot, and Zapier.

That bot model creates a consent burden. Otter also faces In re Otter.AI Privacy Litigation, a consolidated federal class action alleging recording without all-party consent and training on recordings. A motion-to-dismiss hearing was held May 20, 2026; no outcome is implied here. Otter's privacy policy effective June 16, 2026 permits training on de-identified recordings and transcripts.

5. Fireflies.ai — same shape as Otter, different lawsuit

Fireflies' bot, Fred, joins Zoom, Meet, Teams, and Webex. It offers summaries, action items, AskFred, and transcription in more than 100 languages. Its security page says customers own their data and training is off by default.

Calendar auto-join can create the same uninvited-bot problem as Otter. Fireflies also faces Cruz v. Fireflies.AI Corp., filed December 2025, which alleges voiceprint-based speaker identification violated Illinois BIPA consent requirements. The case remained ongoing at the research date; no settlement was confirmed.

How to choose

Start with what you actually used Limitless for, because "Limitless user" covered two different people.

If you lived in the desktop app: your options split on cloud versus local processing. Granola offers bot-free cloud meetings, while Otter and Fireflies use meeting bots. Everpaper is a Mac-only private beta; ScreenPipe is a cross-platform toolkit. Both keep the capture record on your machine. If you wore the Pendant: nothing on this list replaces hands-free, in-person wearable capture. Everpaper and ScreenPipe cover computer activity.
