Short answer

Meta acquired Limitless, the company that was Rewind, in December 2025. The Rewind Mac app stopped all screen and audio capture on 19 December 2025, and Pendant support is promised only through 2026. The Mac alternatives that still record are Everpaper (macOS 15+, Apple silicon, private beta) and Screenpipe (macOS, Windows, Linux). Granola covers meetings only.

Disclosure. Everpaper is our product, and it is in this article. We say where it falls short, and every competitor fact below carries the date we checked it.

Facts as of October 2026. Prices and features change. Each source is linked at the end.

If you used Rewind to search your own past on a Mac, that tool is gone, and the Pendant that followed it has a support window that ends with 2026. This page covers what happened, what it means for your data, and what you can run now.

What happened

Limitless is the company that used to be Rewind. Its site says it has been acquired by Meta. It stopped selling the Pendant on 5 December 2025. Its latest app update, it says, “disables all screen and audio capture starting December 19, 2025”, and it will keep supporting existing Pendant customers throughout 2026. The Unlimited plan is free for existing customers.

In Brazil, China, the EU, Israel, South Korea, Turkey and the UK the service ended on 5 December 2025. Users in those regions had until 19 December to download their information, and Limitless says accounts and data are permanently deleted after that. News coverage of the acquisition is at 9to5Mac.

Everpaper

Everpaper is our product. It is the closest match if you want what Rewind did on a Mac, with the history staying on the Mac. Screen history takes a screenshot of each display every 2 minutes by default and reads it on the device. Detailed screen history adds extra images of the window you are working in after meaningful changes. Ask answers questions across your days and meetings and shows the screenshot or the moment in the recording.

Limits: it runs on macOS 15 or later on Apple silicon only. It is in private beta, so you cannot download it today, and there is no public price. It starts a fresh history, with no Rewind importer. AI answers need a provider you set up, and cloud providers stay off until you allow them.

Choose it if you are on an Apple silicon Mac and want the history to stay there.

Screenpipe

Screenpipe records screen, audio and meetings and runs on macOS (Apple silicon and Intel), Windows 10 and 11, and Linux. Its README says capture history stays on your device by default, and that cloud AI, sync and integrations use separate data paths. The Free plan runs on one device. Basic is $21 a month or $250 a year, and Business is $42 per seat a month or $500 per seat a year. The GitHub page names its license as the Screenpipe Commercial License and describes it as source-available.

Choose it if you need Windows or Linux, or want to build on top of the data.

Granola

Granola does not record your screen. It is a meeting notepad: the desktop app captures device audio with no bot, and every plan lists “audio deleted after transcription”. Its security page names transcription providers such as Deepgram and AI providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic, and says Granola does not store the audio. Basic is free with 30 days of meeting history, Business is $14 per user a month and Enterprise is $35.

Choose it if meetings were the only thing you used Rewind for.

What about your old Rewind data?

If you still have an export, keep it. Nothing described here imports it. Everpaper builds a new history from the day you start it, and it can import a WebVTT transcript for a single meeting. For anything in the regions where service ended on 5 December 2025, the date to download was 19 December, and the data is gone.

How to choose

  1. Mac only and the history must stay local: Everpaper, once you have a beta invite.
  2. Windows or Linux as well: Screenpipe.
  3. Meetings only: Granola, knowing it uses cloud providers for transcription and notes.
  4. You are on a Windows PC with a Copilot+ chip: see Microsoft Recall for Mac for how Recall differs.

Frequently asked questions

What happened to Rewind AI?

Rewind's company was renamed Limitless and was then acquired by Meta. Limitless states on its site that it has been acquired by Meta, stopped selling the Pendant on 5 December 2025, and that its latest update disables all screen and audio capture starting 19 December 2025.

Is Limitless shutting down?

The Mac app no longer captures. Limitless says it will keep supporting existing Pendant customers throughout 2026, and it made the Unlimited plan free for existing customers. In Brazil, China, the EU, Israel, South Korea, Turkey and the UK the service ended on 5 December 2025.

Can I still export my Rewind or Limitless data?

In the regions where the service ended, users had until 19 December 2025 to download their information, and Limitless says accounts and data were permanently deleted after that. If you are elsewhere and still have access, export now, since the Pendant support window is limited to 2026.

What is the best Rewind alternative for Mac?

If you want the same idea, a searchable record of your screen on a Mac, the options are Everpaper (private beta, Apple silicon only) and Screenpipe (free on one device). If you only used Rewind for meetings, Granola is a bot-free meeting notepad that uses cloud providers for transcription and notes.

Is there a Rewind alternative that stays on my Mac?

Everpaper keeps screenshots, recordings, transcription and search on the Mac and sends nothing to an AI unless you set a provider up. Screenpipe says capture history stays on your device by default, with cloud AI and sync on separate paths.

Can Everpaper import my Rewind history?

No. Everpaper starts a new history from the day you turn it on. It can import a WebVTT transcript for a single meeting.
